Mercedes-Benz SL500 through the ’90s
With a design that still looks great, the SL500s built between ’90 and ’02 have for the most part aged pretty well, especially later year models. Like most cars, each year it was in production meant a variety of improvements. Still, even though the 2002 was the last year produced, most people much more like the ’96-’98s During that period, the SL500s came with a quad-cam engine and one of the best transmissions through the ’90s.
This R129 body style SL500 was made from 1990 through 2002. It was called the 500 SL from 1990 – 1993.
They all have just about the same suspension regardless of year or package. The “sport” packages are just trim and tires, not suspension, engine or drivetrain. Some packages were called “AMG,” but lack the engines and real hardware of the 2003 and newer AMG model cars.
From 1990 – 1995 the SL500 used a boring hydraulic 4-speed transmission. It was boring because it didn’t usually downshift when punched. A much improved 5-speed electronic transmission was introduced in 1996 and used through today. The 5-speed automatic greatly improves the driving experience because it downshifts instantly, as well as adding a fuel saving overdrive. Continue Reading

What is 4MATIC from Mercedes-Benz?
When looking through the specs of certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles, you will often come across the term “4MATIC” and have been left wondering what that actually means. Simply put, it is a type of four-wheel drive system that was created and is used by Mercedes-Benz. They are used in AWD vehicles as a means to minimize traction loss.
If you need a 4MATIC part or a whole system, visit our parts quote page and request a custom quote.
From the Wiki entry (which describes it much better than I ever could):
4Matic (stylized as 4MATIC) is the marketing name of an AWD four-wheel drive system developed by Mercedes-Benz. It is designed to increase traction in slippery conditions. The four-wheel-drive system was developed in conjunction with Steyr-Daimler-Puch (currently Magna Steyr), who manufactured the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Austria.
Nearly all Mercedes-Benz vehicles that feature this system are paired with an automatic transmission as the default transmission. The first design of 4Matic system was introduced in 1987 on the W124 series (E Class) saloons (four-door) and estate (station wagon) cars. It was available with the 2.6 L and 3.0 L 6-cylinder petrol (gasoline) and diesel engines.
Some newer versions of 4Matic are true AWD as the system remains active at all times.[1] Sophisticated engine management and ABS systems control the amount of torque transferred to each wheel allowing the system to be effective at any speed. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz GLC300 Gets Near-Perfect Review
If you are looking for what is likely the best crossover SUV on the road, you aren’t going to have to look any further than the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300. This SUV ended up earning itself an impressive 8.5 final score (out of 10) from NY Daily News, making it a very highly rated Mercedes-Benz, and one of the best SUVs reviewed by the news organization this year.
If you end up getting one, you should check out the parts we have available by clicking here.
If you’re a prospective luxury crossover buyer, one thing is for certain: You’re definitely not starved of options.
Countless shapes, sizes and powertrains from five different countries are readily available, and the choice is up to you when it comes to which brand you put your hard-earned money down on. But spend some time behind the wheel of a majority of competitors in this segment, and you’ll realize that not all luxury crossovers are created equal; far from it, in fact.
The outgoing Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class was one of the many options, and despite solid reviews and the reputation of one of the world’s most renowned luxury automakers, it was never a sales champion.
With the all-new 2016 GLC-Class, Mercedes has given its small crossover a complete overhaul in face, name and heart. I took the reins of the GLC300 (their volume-seller) for a week to determine if this sleek new challenger is, as Mercedes themselves claim,“the best” or “nothing.” Continue Reading

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Boasts Amazing Transmission
Sporting the latest AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission, the 2018 GT R from Mercedes-AMG is going to offer one of the best rides from a sports car ever built. Seeing as every year these transmissions are even further perfected by Mercedes-Benz engineers, the 7-speed dual clutch coming with the 2018 GT R is one of the most exciting things we’re looking forward to on that model.
Click here to see our currently-on-sale Mercedes-Benz transmissions.
It’s arrived, AMG’s latest weapon, the very Green 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R, designed to go head to head to head with Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS. At its heart is a handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 Biturbo with output of 577 hp, which is 74 hp more than the previous top-of-the-range engine in the GT S. Peak torque of 516 lb-ft is available between 1,900 and 5,500 rpm.
The increase in performance was achieved with the help of new turbochargers with modified compressor machining, a smaller wastegate and new engine mapping. Boost pressure supplied by the turbochargers has been increased from 17.4 psi on the AMG GT to 19.6 psi. In addition, the exhaust ports have been optimized and the compression ratio modified.
The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has been extensively revised by AMG, with modified hardware and software to make the transmission even more suitable for the racetrack. First gear in the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission has a longer ratio, while seventh gear and the final drive have shorter ratios to allow for more rapid acceleration. Continue Reading

Mercedes Team Says Engine Problem Wasn’t as Bad as Perceived
For those of you who have been following the Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 racing team this year, you already know that despite showing relatively well in races, they’re still facing a number of issues. Beyond risk of losing one of their best drivers off the track, when Hamilton and Rosberg are racing, they’re seeing problems stem from poor teamwork to incorrect settings in the Mercedes-Benz engines.
Most recently, they had just that happen when they failed to have the car’s computers configured to give a boost in certain parts of the track.
Mercedes data suggests that the engine mode error that hit Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in the European Grand Prix was only costing them 0.2 seconds each lap.
Although Hamilton’s pace fell away dramatically – and bounced back immediately as soon as the issue had been resolved – his bosses insist that the lack of energy deployment was not as dramatic as it appeared to be from the outside.
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff reckoned, however, that the electronic setting that left the drivers without an extra power boost at certain sections of the track may have felt worse from the cockpit than the reality of the time lost
“We don’t know how much it is [exactly], and we need to analyse how much it is,” explained Wolff. “But as per the data – it is 0.2 seconds per lap.
“It must have felt like much more though because the engine was derating between Turns Two and Three, where you expect the biggest boost.” Continue Reading

A Discussion About Rims
While it is a notably rare for a person to have the rims stolen off of a vehicle, we often hear news about it happening. While looking through news stories in an attempt to offer you guys Mercedes-Benz news coverage with only interesting or pertinent hand-picked stories, we end up seeing a ton of articles about some local police station or dealing with tire and rim thieves.
However, there is a positive side to this story – every story about a serial rim thief ends with the guy (it is pretty much always a male) getting caught by the local police force. Likewise, pretty much every one of these stories takes place on public streets, so if you park even in a driveway, if not a garage, your rims are about as safe as can be. What makes your rims even safer is the fact that a lot of the thefts happens from stores rather than individual car owners.
In any case, whenever we share stories about these kinds of crimes, the chances of your Mercedes-Benz rims or tires being taken are still practically zero.
We also see that a number of these stories end up being very targeted thefts, like this one about a person who got mad at a Walmart employee that wouldn’t accept a toy return so they got even by stealing the employee’s rims.
As noted above, these people seem to always get caught. And with that, here’s a story about some rims thieves getting arrested by Dartmouth police.
DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) — Police in Dartmouth arrested two men early Monday morning after they’re accused of stealing tire materials from a local car dealership.
Officers pulled over a car just before 2:00 a.m., arresting Kenneth Botelho, 27, and Javier Nova, 27, both of New Bedford. Continue Reading

Mercedes Builds America’s Most Affordable Convertible
They weren’t kidding when they told us that we’re always learning something new. For me, it was that those tiny Smart cars on the road (as opposed to smart cars that independently react to road conditions) are manufactured by Mercedes-Benz.
That being the case, we can technically claim that the under-$20,000 Smart ForTwo Cabriolet is a Mercedes, which means our favorite German manufacturer produces the least expensive new convertible in the US.
Need to fix your Mercedes-Benz convertible top? Click here to see what’s available.
You don’t normally associate Mercedes-Benz with a low MSRP — even its used cars are expensive, once maintenance is taken into account. Yet, starting this fall, the least expensive convertible — hell, the only convertible starting under $20,000 — will be a German, although it won’t have the three-pointed star on the hood.
After taking a gap year to find itself, the Smart ForTwo Cabriolet is returning for the 2017 model year. With an all-new look inside and out, this diminutive runabout will rock a starting price of $18,900. That’s with a manual, though — spring for the dual-clutch gearbox, and you’re looking at $19,890, before options and tax and all that.
Its automatic canvas soft top is capable of stopping early and acting like a sunroof, or going all the way back for more of a proper top-down feeling, and you can remove the roof bars for even more airiness. Continue Reading

New Daimler Patent to Make Snowy Driving Safer Using Rainwater
Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler has applied for a new patent that should make driving in the snow much safer. The design shows us a small collection unit that grabs water dripping down the back window which gets moved to a holding container. When the car detects snow, that collected water gets ran through a heating process that gets it just warm enough to melt snow. Once warm enough, the water gets sprayed directly on the tires by three nozzles.
With this system in place, your Mercedes-Benz steering should see a marked improvement in freezing weather.
A patent recently filed by Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler sheds light on a new technology that could make driving in snowy and icy conditions much safer.
A diagram submitted with the patent illustrates an innovative system that improves traction by spraying hot water on tires in order to melt snow and ice. The water is pumped out of a small tank it’s stored in and through a heat exchanger, a process that makes it hot enough to melt snow. It’s then sprayed directly onto the spinning tire by three small nozzles integrated into the wheel well. Sensors presumably send a signal to the ECU when the tires themselves need to be de-iced.
The system is designed to collect water as it drips down the rear window — it can be either rainwater, water from a car wash, or melting snow. Drivers who live in Seattle shouldn’t need to top up the tank; those who live in Palm Springs and occasionally take a weekend trip to a ski resort, though, will likely need to fill up before they leave. 2017 Smart ForTwo Cabriolet to be Cheapest Convertible
Taking a quick break from talking about things like Mercedes-Benz transmissions, we saw that the Smart ForTwo Cabrios are going to be the cheapest convertibles available in the US with a price tag of under $20,000. Well, under $20k for the completely basic package – if you pick up one of these neat little economy cars, you’ll (likely) add enough options to get it a thousand or two more than you were expecting. Though, that still leaves it a super-affordable convertible.

Mercedes-Benz Sees Best June Ever
With over 28,000 units sold through the month of June, Mercedes-Benz USA has topped their best-ever sales figures for June. Not only that, but when the Mercedes-Benz total is added to with the company’s subsidiary brands of Mercedes-Benz vans and Smart, they actually ended up totaling 31,965 vehicles sold through June 2016. That number is a solid 2.3 percent higher than the 2015 figure and marks yet another great month for the German automaker’s American branch.
There are a few reasons that Mercedes-Benz USA believes that their sales have increased through June. The most prominent of which is that it marked the launch of the company’s E-Class vehicles.
Likewise, they launched what the Mercedes-Benz CEO Dietmar Exler has deemed as “several dream cars,” which he also believes will get Mercedes-Benz USA into excellent position for the third quarter of 2016.
Looking at the sales numbers of their best sellers through June, too, you can see exactly what Exler means. C-Class vehicles sold the most overall with 6,867 and GLEs sold 4,515 through the entirety of June. What is crazy is that the company’s E-Class cars (which includes the CLS in their report) sold 4,292 units, which might not seem all that impressive until you realize that these cars weren’t even available until the last week of June! The Mercedes-AMG line is also seeing awesome growth this year, and they sold over 1,500 of these high-performance cars through June of this year while last year only saw a bit over 1,000.
With all of this in mind, it will certainly be interesting to see how well Mercedes-Benz USA does for the rest of the summer.
Speaking of summer, if you are looking to show off your new Mercedes-Benz, you should check out our great selection of rims (which are currently on sale, too).
