Last week, two big milestones in autonomous driving slipped by almost unnoticed.

One had to do with a commercial by Mercedes-Benz for the new E-Class. The car lets you drive without holding the steering wheel or using the accelerator and brakes for short periods (but also at very high speeds). However, they decided to pull the ad to avoid any confusion with fully autonomous cars from Google and other companies.

The other big news item had to do with a Tesla statement about the accident that killed a Model S owner in Florida. The company says the automatic brakes were to blame for the accident, not the somewhat poorly named AutoPilot mode that steers, brakes, and accelerates automatically. It’s a war of semantics. Mercedes breaks out the upset of the century as they whip out the world’s first fully electric semi-truck just a week after the Tesla press conference in which they announced that they were working on a similar project. This upset is sure to be a major blow on Tesla’s reputation as the go-to high end E-car manufacturer as Mercedes encroaches further into the smaller companies market.

And in a world more concerned than ever about carbon footprints and the nature of pollution, it makes sense that the auto industry titan moves in to become the dominate force of the E-car market.

Daimler isn’t about to let Tesla own any more ‘firsts’ in electric transportation; the German company revealed the Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck today in Stuttgart, an all-electric truck with a total admissible weight capacity of 26 tonnes (29 U.S. tons), which makes it the first clean energy big rig of its kind.

As the name implies, it’s designed for use in urban environments, capping off the short-sprint end of the heavy transport shipping cycle. That’s in part due to its max range of 200 kilometres (about 124 miles). The prototype Urban eTruck is ready for its close-up, but Daimler notes that we’ll have to wait until a “conceivable” launch window of “the beginning of the next decade” for wide-scale production and real-world use. Mercedes Benz Ownership Doesn’t Have to be Expensive

Freddy Hernandez proves it doesn’t take a fortune to own a Mercedes S-class, but just a little mechanical and market know-how. It’s unfathomable to many to drive a luxury car on the regular as a day to day car to get you around to where you need to be, but Freddy proves it’s possible with a 16 year old S-class that he got for $3000 and has piled on 20,000 miles on since his purchase a few years back.

His secret is in the Mercedes Benz S500 which has a plethora of amazing features making it an excellent luxury car, but due to one easily fixable problem the car has plummeted in price over the years to be a ludicrously affordable car that will give a Civic a run for its money in almost every single category you could put the two in.

The only reason it matches the average aftermarket Civic in price is due to a critical fault that can cause the entire car to become water damaged in some ways you’d never heard of in modern cars. But this fault can be fixed by following simple online guides, and every other issue can be solved by buying replacement parts by clicking here and reading up on maintaining your Mercedes model.

Whenever I see a 1998 Acura Integra with a cursive decal on the front window saying “Daily Driven,” my reaction is a curt “Yeah, no shit.” However, if you own a heavily depreciated and insanely complex luxury car like I do, the prospect of driving it daily on a shoestring budget becomes exponentially more interesting, if only to outline how many things have gone wrong over the years.

It had more than 200 patents filed in its development, had a fiber optic audio system, double-paned windows, massaging seats, and it served as the flagship for the Mercedes-Benz brand, taking over the mantle of the tank-like W140 chassis.

Mercedes Benz Full Manufacturing Line in the US

Mercedes is going all in on a new production facility in North Charleston, South Carolina making it the first US factory owned by the company that will build every component of a vehicle to be assembled on location. This sets the Sprinter Van up to be Mercedes’ mainstay line in the Americas, which can be a letdown for many who appreciate the appeal of the classy Benz cars. For those who prefer the luxury cars from Mercedes, parts will be ordered from overseas as usual, but to save a quick buck click here and check out some parts already stocked up on this side of the Atlantic.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC is breaking ground on a $500 million sprinter van plant in North Charleston Wednesday.

Officials say the Sprinter plant will be one of the most advanced automobile production sites in North America.

A spokesperson says the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van makes history, as it will be built completely from scratch in the U.S. for the first time, right here in North Charleston.

The plant will be an additional 1.1 million square feet, which is twice the size of the existing reassembly facility, and will feature a new body shop, paint shop and assembly line.

The company also predicts that up to 1,300 positions will need filling by the end of the decade, when the plant is expected to open.

The ground breaking event is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the new Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC off of Palmetto Commerce Parkway. Continue Reading

Where Mercedes-Benz is Heading

The roadmap we’ve gotten to see shows a busy game plan for Mercedes this year and the coming year and it seems their engineers have been busy at work designing up threats against the company’s biggest market competitors. Mercedes-Benz is on track to introduce no less than nine new or redesigned models. These include a facelifted S-Class, and a more rugged version of the brand new E-Class station wagon aimed squarely at Audi’s allroad. The E-Class lineup is also set to receive new coupe and convertible variants, while the company will introduce a pickup based on the Nissan Navara at the end of next year.

Interestingly, the original version of the presentation (pictured in our gallery) showed a model dubbed GLA Coupe. The slide was quickly amended, and the coupe’s spot has been filled by a simply a facelifted version of the GLA crossover. Mercedes hasn’t commented on the change. The GT R that debuted last month is also listed as one of the new models.

The slide also confirms that Mercedes-AMG is working on a topless version of the GT called GT C. It lists a coupe version of the GT C, which has fueled rumors that the 911-fighting model will receive a new engine next year. A Mercedes-Benz for the Hardest of Workers

The new Metris comes in two styles to suit customers various needs. The first is the Metris Cargo which offers 186 cubic feet of cargo room and 180-degree rear doors. Mercedes also offers the Metris Worker Passenger which offers room for 7 including the driver. For around 30,000 new, these are some of the cheapest Benz models on the market. With a 5000 lb tow weight, these Mercedes Metris pack quite a punch.

That’s a Hot Mercedes-Benz!

While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the only major property damage to happen at the country club seems to be this poor Mercedes Benz which has been totaled by the blaze. The smoke pillar from the CLK 350 could be seen from several blocks away. There has been no official police statement on if it was arson or not, but in my professional opinion, a Benz just doesn’t burst into flames like that.

For the driver of that car, I’d recommend clicking here and replacing that ashy old interior with something a little less fire damaged.

SAN ANTONIO — A silver Mercedes-Benz convertible was engulfed in flames and completely destroyed Monday afternoon outside the San Antonio Country Club just north of downtown.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze after receiving a call at about 12:33 p.m. in the 4100 block of North New Braunfels Avenue. Smoke could be seen rising into the sky from several blocks away, according to a reader’s photo.

SAFD spokesman Woody Woodward said the fire’s cause is currently unknown.

The vehicle, a CLK 350 convertible, was parked near the club’s pool but was not close enough to other vehicles for the fire to spread.
