When Luxury Collides

There was an unfortunate accident at the Great Falls Cars and Coffee Gathering August 6th where a Mercedes driver failed to parallel park and crushed the hood of a gorgeous Italian Ferrari. While modern Mercedes have options that allow them to safely park themselves, this old model outdates that feature by quite some time.

The latest cars from Mercedes-Benz are available with self-parking systems that can autonomously steer them into a space without hitting anything. Unfortunately for one Virginia woman, that technology wasn’t available in the 1980’s.

The driver of a Mercedes-Benz 380 SL had some trouble parallel parking at the Great Falls Cars and Coffee gathering on August 6th, when she backed up into and onto the hood of a Ferrari.

Exciting New Benz Coupe on the Horizon

The German auto maker has left us very little to go with when their twitter posted “Hot & cool — Almost 6 meters of ultimate luxury.” This quote along with a vague silhouette of a red Mercedes unlike any other is their teaser and it leaves much to be excited for in the near future.

It is likely this is the new Maybach sub-brand coming back with a vengeance. While the Maybach brings back memories of classic luxury autos, this beast seems entirely sleek and new, we’re excite to see how this beast turns out but for those into classic cars and maintaining those ancient trustworthy engines, there is little chance for this relaunch to impress the connoisseur.

“Hot & cool — Almost 6 meters of ultimate luxury.”

That’s all that Mercedes-Benz has said so far about the sleek coupe pictured above. The photo and caption popped up on Mercedes’ official Twitter account on Thursday.

So what’s this about?

A new ultra-luxury coupe from Mercedes-Benz?

That red coupe is almost certainly a concept car that Mercedes intends to show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California next weekend. Concept cars can be pure flights of fancy, or they can be close previews of upcoming production cars. Mercedes Benz’s 2017 E Class Drive Assist

Alex Roy burnt the midnight oil to deeply test and analyze the benefits and problems of Mercedes’ new top of the line Driver Assist mechanics which were a big step towards self driving cars. To put things briefly, he rather approved of a great many features Mercedes had progressed on and implemented well, but also lamented some critical failures of the system which he considered unsafe.

When push comes to shove though, the car’s features were mostly good, and with the right dedication you can toggle settings for achieving your perfect level of assistance while driving.

Unfortunately a lot of us who don’t have a new Mercedes will be missing out on some excellent life and fender saving technology.

What follows is a full review, as promised, of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including the new Drive Pilot feature and what Mercedes calls “semi-automated” driving features. This is a follow-up to my original and disputed comparison of this technology suite to Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

I note that this test included, over the course of one week, about 250 miles of real-world testing in a top-of-the-line E-Class with Premium 3 Package; 400 pages read (and re-read) of the E-Class owner’s manual; heavy perusal of the company’s website and public statements regarding Drive Pilot; and two undercover visits to dealerships to ask questions of the sales people. Ready for Your EQ-line Mercedes Benz?

For anyone interested in the new line of electric cars by Mercedes, it seems that the auto maker has made a move for securing their brand name as they have trademarked a grand array of variants of the letter pairing EQ. It also looks like the standard naming process will be MEQ followed by a final designation letter.

Last week, I wrote about a Bloomberg piece that suggested Mercedes-Benz is on the verge of releasing a subbrand dedicated to electric vehicles. Now, it appears there’s more evidence to back up this claim, and that comes in the form of some pretty straightforward trademarks.

The German automaker applied to trademark the EQ prefix and several slogans including “EQ inside” and “Generation MEQ,” AutoExpress reports. Its trademark application for the prefix covers a variety of potential badges, from EQA all the way down to EQX. If this were a random trademark, it would be an awfully specific random trademark, although automakers do occasionally apply for patents and trademarks on ideas that may never make it to the public. ’30s Benz Roadster with a History Set to Sell

Not only is this gorgeous 500k Special Roader by Mercedes-Benz only one of 29 existing models, it has also gained historic relevance. The Benz is said to have been owned by German industrialist Hans Prym who had lost the car to allied soldiers who had occupied his estate. In 2011 the Roadster was seized by the government and returned to the descendants of Hans Prym who have now set it for auction.

A rare Mercedes believed to have been stolen by Allied troops at the end of World War Two is up for auction with a £6 million price tag.

The 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Special Roadster was hidden on the estate of German industrialist Hans Prym, who was imprisoned in 1945, during the war.

But invading American troops stole the car while they lodged at Prym’s estate, according to Bonhams, which is handling the sale.

“It’s no surprise that the 500K appealed to Hans Prym, who was a highly successful industrialist,” said Philip Kantor, Bonhams European head of motoring. “The vehicle was vast, stately, and incredibly powerful, only to be possessed by the elite.” Continue Reading

Can Mercedes Beat Tesla at Electric?

There has been quite a big fuss recently with the downturned market for luxury sedans and the huge growth rate of electric cars and their popularity. Tesla made it a point to show off these statistics to their investors.

It seems Mercedes has taken up these numbers and has 4 consumer electric automobiles in the works which will come as early as late 2017.

While it is expected that Tesla will have superior electronic interfaces, Mercedes style of electric car will no doubt feature unbeatable luxury interiors.

Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) loves to point out that sales of its Model S rose sharply last year while other luxury brands’ big sedans lost ground. It went so far as to include this chart in its fourth-quarter report to shareholders in February:

Needless to say, executives at the German luxury automakers don’t feel the same love for Tesla’s chart. In fact, they’re steamed: More and more reports (like this one in Automobile Magazine, in which a Porsche product manager slams Tesla’s Model S) suggest that BMW (NASDAQOTH:BAMXF), Audi, Porsche, and Daimler‘s (NASDAQOTH:DDAIF) Mercedes-Benz unit aren’t just gearing up to launch more electric cars. Pro Athletes Not Necessarily Good at Other Sports

It really does seem like golf is not the forte of former Chicago Bull Artis Gilmore who recently smashed someone’s windshield while playing a few rounds of golf.

Fortunately the owner of the Mercedes, which lost its windshield, had insurance and will have it replaced, but advises Artis that perhaps he should stick to basketball.

It seems NBA Hall of Famer ­Artis Gilmore is less accurate with a golf club than he was on the court.

We’re told that while on the links on Long Island with Nancy Shevell’s ex-husband, Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman, the 7-foot-2 former Chicago Bulls center launched his golf ball through the window of a nearby Mercedes.

Puppies Saved from (What’s No Longer) a Luxury SUV

Police responded to a concerned citizen call which brought them to the Mercedes SUV that a 54 year old lady was using as her home in the Bronx along with a 4 year old German shepherd and 21 puppies. The puppies have been taken into shelters for recovery and have yet to be put up for open adoption.

While it is great news that the puppies are in good shape, it’s a shame the state the Mercedes SUV Interior was left in.

Authorities in New York City say they’ve rescued 22 dogs that were living with their owner in filthy conditions inside a Mercedes-Benz SUV.

New York Police Department officers alerted by a concerned citizen earlier this week found the 54-year-old woman and the dogs living inside the vehicle in the Bronx.

Authorities say a 4-year-old German shepherd named Bruno and 21 puppies were living in filth and needed medical attention when officers found them.

Two rescue groups are caring for the dogs. It’s unclear when they will be available for adoption.

The dogs’ owner was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Continue Reading

More Waiting for Benz Diesels

The Volkswagen Diesel scandal has tightened regulations and testing on all imported cars to the United States and BMW is the first of the manufacturers to get through the new regulations process. Good news for BMW fans, but for anyone who wanted a 2017 Diesel Benz is likely going to wait until mid 2017 for the 2018 models.

The EPA has now officially approved all of BMW’s 2017 turbodiesel models for sale here following a delay attributed to additional evaluation being performed in order to certify their compliance with U.S. emissions regulations.

The extra scrutiny, which resulted from Volkswagen’s high-profile diesel emissions scandal, has impacted all automakers with diesel offerings in their lineup.

In the case of BMW, those models include the 2017 328d Sedan, 328d Sports Wagon, X3 xDrive28d SAV, and the X5 xDrive35d SAV. Approval of some final homologation details is expected shortly, at which point production will begin.

While all four vehicles are expected to be in dealers some time later this year, BMW hasn’t set a hard date on when that will happen. Continue Reading
