Tesla makes the hottest electric vehicles in town, but that’s only because Tesla is the only carmaker that’s been serious about electric cars for any decent amount of time. But as Tesla tries to figure out how to manufacture and deliver its cheapest electric vehicle yet on time, Tesla’s competitors are readying plans to make their own electric cars. Among them is none other than Mercedes-Benz, a former Tesla shareholder, which will manufacture a Tesla Model S killer by 2018.

This isn’t a rumor anymore, as the German company confirmed it’s working on such a car, offering expected range, price and launch details for the vehicle. Even better, the car will be on display at this year’s Paris car show.

BMW has not been experiencing a bad year, but it’s slow growth has allowed Mercedes-Benz to take the lead in luxury auto sales by 20,000 units according to Bloomberg. Mercedes growth in sales this year has been double that of what BMW has experienced and the trend continues. With Mercedes becoming the lead brand of luxury automobiles, be sure to get the parts to tune up your Benz.

Mercedes-Benz appears to be succeeding in its quest to displace BMW as the top global luxury brand.

Daimler’s luxury division has delivered more than a million vehicles in the first half of the year, representing an increase of 12 percent over the same period last year.

BMW is not having a bad year, selling around 986,500 vehicles through June, though its six-percent growth rate has allowed Mercedes-Benz to extend a 20,000-unit sales lead, according to numbers cited by Bloomberg.

As the rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz continues to grow, Audi appears to be firmly relegated to third place with 953,200 vehicles delivered in the first half. Continue Reading

Due to an unfortunate flaw in the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic’s power assisted steering program the line of cars has been recalled to prevent increased risk of crash. There are no reported crashes so far, but due to a software error in the power steering system there could be a failure of power steering reducing the responsiveness of the vehicle. 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Recalled For Steering Problem

WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 17 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic sedans because of a steering problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“In the affected vehicles, the electric power steering assist system may shut down due to a software error,” NHTSA said in its recall summary. “If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The affected vehicles were built from November 4, 2015 to March 1, 2016.

A Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking if there are any injuries or crashes linked to the recall. Continue Reading

With a design that still looks great, the SL500s built between ’90 and ’02 have for the most part aged pretty well, especially later year models. Like most cars, each year it was in production meant a variety of improvements. Still, even though the 2002 was the last year produced, most people much more like the ’96-’98s During that period, the SL500s came with a quad-cam engine and one of the best transmissions through the ’90s.

This R129 body style SL500 was made from 1990 through 2002. It was called the 500 SL from 1990 – 1993.

They all have just about the same suspension regardless of year or package. The “sport” packages are just trim and tires, not suspension, engine or drivetrain. Some packages were called “AMG,” but lack the engines and real hardware of the 2003 and newer AMG model cars.

From 1990 – 1995 the SL500 used a boring hydraulic 4-speed transmission. It was boring because it didn’t usually downshift when punched. A much improved 5-speed electronic transmission was introduced in 1996 and used through today. The 5-speed automatic greatly improves the driving experience because it downshifts instantly, as well as adding a fuel saving overdrive. Continue Reading

4Matic (stylized as 4MATIC) is the marketing name of an AWD four-wheel drive system developed by Mercedes-Benz. It is designed to increase traction in slippery conditions. The four-wheel-drive system was developed in conjunction with Steyr-Daimler-Puch (currently Magna Steyr), who manufactured the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Austria.

Nearly all Mercedes-Benz vehicles that feature this system are paired with an automatic transmission as the default transmission. The first design of 4Matic system was introduced in 1987 on the W124 series (E Class) saloons (four-door) and estate (station wagon) cars. It was available with the 2.6 L and 3.0 L 6-cylinder petrol (gasoline) and diesel engines.
